A perfect lab score is not a business outcome, but a slow site creates friction before the buyer understands the offer. Performance is best treated as a design constraint from the first decision—not a cleanup task before launch.

Render useful HTML first

Marketing pages should deliver meaningful content without waiting for a large JavaScript application to initialize. Static generation or server rendering gives visitors and search systems a complete document quickly.

Reserve client-side JavaScript for interactions that truly need it, such as a form with inline status or a complex calculator.

Give media a budget

Large hero videos and uncompressed images are common sources of delay. Define size and quality limits before assets are selected.

  • Use modern formats and responsive image sizes.
  • Set width and height to prevent layout shifts.
  • Lazy-load media below the initial viewport.
  • Prefer a strong static composition when motion adds little meaning.

Treat fonts as a performance decision

A brand font can be self-hosted and subset to the characters the site needs. Limit families and weights, use font-display swap, and choose fallback metrics that reduce visible movement while fonts load.

Challenge every third-party script

Analytics, chat widgets, tag managers, heatmaps, scheduling tools, and advertising pixels compete for the same browser resources. Each one should have an owner, a clear purpose, and a measurable reason to remain.

Protect the critical path

The initial viewport needs a small amount of CSS, predictable layout, and almost no blocking work. Avoid loading components for pages the visitor has not opened. Cache stable assets for a long time and compress text responses.

Test the experience, not only the score

Use Lighthouse during development, then monitor real Core Web Vitals after launch. Test representative mobile devices, slower connections, keyboard navigation, and the actual conversion path.

A useful target is not one screenshot of 100. It is a consistently fast experience that remains fast as content and marketing tools change.
